The grand daddy of them all and an absolute must in my opinion is 'A People's History of Britain' by Rebecca Fraser. It offers a huge overview of British history in a very accessible manner.
Not far behind is Simon Sebag Montefiore's Book on 'Heroes and Monsters'. A fascinating account of around 50 demented dictators throughout history and why they were the way they were and what they did.
If you would like an alternative and amusing history of the British Isles then you can not go wrong with John O'Farrell's 'An utterly Impartial History of Britain'
Equally funny but covering a broader range of stories is 'Napoleon's Haemmorrhoids' by Phil Mason.
You can't go far wrong either with Tony Robinson's book 'In Search of British Heroes' which is written in his usual witty and breezy style.
A great account of any often overlooked aspect of European History can be found in the 4 DVD set on Barbarians
And a great fun and illuminating account on real Pirates can by watching the 'Real Pirates of the Caribbean'.

So many battles have been fought across all of Britain and my favourite DVD covering this is 'Battlefield Britain'
